Robert Ludwig’s career has been focused on the training and performance of choral ensembles and has always included teaching of children and young people as a critical part of that work.
Mr. Ludwig’s previous positions include Director of Music at St. John's Episcopal Church, Bangor; Artistic Director of the Bangor Area Children's Choir, Director of Choral Music and Music Theory at Garden City High School (a multiple-year Grammy Signature School semi-finalist and one of the 100 best communities in the U.S. for music education), Choirmaster at Long Island’s Episcopal Cathedral of the Incarnation, Professor of Music at the Mercer School of Theology, Minister of Music at Garden City Community Church and Choirmaster at Christ Church (Cathedral) Lexington, KY. His choirs have performed from Canada to Florida, and have also sung in such notable venues as St. Paul’s Cathedral, London and Wells and Coventry Cathedrals. He has conducted a wide variety of choirs (from four-year olds to adult professionals), but has always maintained a primary focus on choirs of young people singing the finest of musical repertoire. He taught Advanced Placement Music Theory for eleven years, with students consistently achieving high scores. His students at Garden City High School also scored consistently well on All-State auditions; in 2010 his students represented the largest number of singers from any single school in the New York All State Choruses. In 2011 he was named by recent alumni as one of the teachers who best prepared them for college.
As a performer on pipe organ, piano, and harpsichord, Mr. Ludwig has presented concerts throughout the East Coast - as a solo recitalist and as an accompanist of choirs, solo singers, and instrumentalists featuring music ranging from baroque masterpieces to Gershwin. Together with Nancy Ludwig he presented a concert series featuring the complete organ music of J.S. Bach. He has been the music director and keyboard player for numerous shows - including The Sound of Music, Beauty and the Beast, Guys and Dolls, Little Shop of Horrors, Grease and The Music Man.
Mr. Ludwig holds degrees in music from Davidson College (NC) and Yale University with additional study in Vienna and The Netherlands. He has been an active member of the American Choral Director’s Association, serving for a number of years on the NY State board of that organization. He has conducted numerous major choral works, often with orchestral accompaniment and featuring historically-informed presentations with period instruments. His programs have often included world premieres of commissioned pieces, multi-cultural offerings in foreign languages, and an unusually wide variety of musical styles from Gregorian chant to vocal jazz to Mongolian throat singing.
