Tuition

Tuition for private music lessons may be paid monthly or weekly. Checks may be made payable to Robert Ludwig and mailed to Robert Ludwig, PO Box 1075, Rangeley, ME 04970.

30 minute lessons are $20/lesson. Students at Rangeley Lakes Regional School are charged $15 per lesson and additional costs are subsidized by the Rangeley Friends of the Arts.

45 minute lessons are $30/lesson. Students at Rangeley Lakes Regional School are charged $25 per lesson and additional costs are subsidized by the Rangeley Friends of the Arts.

Music books are purchased at a discount by the teacher and students reimburse the teacher this discounted price.

Lesson Length

For advanced students, a lesson length of 45 or 60 minutes is highly preferable to a 30 minute lesson. 30 minutes a week is not adequate time to cover scales and technical exercises, review of assigned work, exploration of new repertoire, improvisation, composition, sight-reading, music theory and music history.

Missed Lessons

Missed lessons are sometimes unavoidable due to today’s busy schedules.

  • If the teacher must miss a lesson, that lesson will be rescheduled.
  • If the public schools close due to snow, lessons are left to your discretion. Any lessons missed if the schools are closed will be rescheduled. Please inform me if you are unable to make a lesson due to inclement weather.
  • In the event of illness, schedule conflict, or family plans I will do my best to arrange a rescheduled time. In the event of extended illness, please consult with me about options.

Studio Opportunities

Recitals – Public performance is an essential part of the life of any musician. An annual studio recital sponsored by the Rangeley Friends of the Arts will be presented in the spring, and each student is expected to perform. An informal and non-mandatory holiday recital will be held in December.

Interview

A brief interview (around 15 minutes) is required before the first lesson. This is an opportunity for the student, parent, and teacher to all meet at the music studio and make certain that everyone is in agreement and understanding concerning details of the teaching arrangement. While no preparation is necessary, if the student has taken music lessons previously it is helpful if he/she brings any of the recent books used. If the student wishes to perform a brief piece at the interview, that is welcome but not necessary. There is no charge for the interview.

Practice

Students are responsible for practicing their full assignment and preparing the lesson that has been assigned. Students must remember to bring the following materials to lessons:

  • All books currently in use

Guidelines to facilitate effective practicing:

  • Maintain practice time at a daily minimum arranged with the teacher.
  • Give practice time the same priority as homework.
  • Schedule practice time at a regular time every day.
  • When desired, break practicing into smaller sessions to help maintain concentration.
  • When practicing, avoid distractions such as television, pets, visitors, phones, or interruptions for chores.
  • Regularly review all items listed in the Studio Assignment Notebook.
  • Occasionally review pieces previously learned.
  • Occasionally sight-read music of your own choice.

Proper grooming, dress and studio use

  • Keep fingernails short, as long nails impede good hand position.
  • Keep hands clean and germ-free out of respect for the other students using the piano; washing hands before the lesson is recommended.
  • Please wear clothing appropriate for school.
  • Lessons are normally taught in a second floor garage music studio at 993 Loon Lake Rd (just past Wegman's Lodge)
  • Parents and siblings are welcome to wait in adjacent areas during the lesson, if they wish, but are not required to be present during lessons.
